Neglected by film historians for years, she was the first woman to direct a film. From 1896 to 1920, she directed over 1,000 films, some 150 of which survive, and 22 of which are feature-length. She experimented with Gaumontās Chronophone sync-sound system, color tinting, interracial casting and special effects.
